House passes autism- commission legislation

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. House late last month passed legislation sponsored by Rep. Peter G. Palumbo, D-Cranston, creating a commission to study the quality of life of individuals with autism in Rhode Island.
The bill, H-5099, now goes to the Senate for consideration. If enacted, it would create a board called the “Special Joint Commission to Study the Quality of Life and Create Positive Outcomes for Individuals with Autism.”
The commission proposed in the bill by Palumbo is an outgrowth of an existing commission he has chaired for the past few years that studied the education of children with autism.
The joint resolution calls on the commission to report its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly by the end of January 2014. •
