Spending decisions by both consumers and businesses depend in large part on their expectations of the coming weeks, months and years.

Optimistic assessments of the future are more likely to lead to bullish approaches to spending, just as pessimistic views likely lead to less investment and buying behavior.

Individual estimates of the length of the recession, then, will go a long way toward determining its actual length.
