How should R.I. use federal stimulus aid?

As Congress continues to debate the nearly $1 trillion stimulus bill – the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 – many economists and political leaders agree on the general size of the package, but serious difference remain over how the money should be spent.

Some contend that all the money should be directed at projects and incentives that will have an impact within the next 18 months.

Others argue that any stimulus package should have both immediate and long-term effects, since, they say, many of the problems the recession is exposing have nothing to do with the business cycle, but are structural in nature.
