PAWTUCKET – Bilingual students at the International Charter School (ICS) have outperformed their peers from public schools in statewide testing.

ICS saw increases of between 6 percent and 10 percent over last year’s results of the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).

The most recent results, from tests taken in October 2011, were released Feb. 9 and showed particular strength among ICS’ Hispanic, “Limited English Proficient” (LEP) and low Socioeconomic Status (SES) students.

ICS says its program is meeting the needs of Hispanic, LEP and low SES students at higher levels than other schools in the state. On the NECAP’ writing sections, for example, ICS’ 5th grade Hispanic students are demonstrating proficiency at a rate 23 percent higher than the state average, according to the school.

Math scores among 3rd-5th grade LEP students are 24 percent higher than the state average. The NECAP results show similar gaps in reading scores. •
