PROVIDENCE – International Game Technology PLC recently released its 2015 Sustainability Report, its first since the merger with GTECH in April that year.
The report details the company’s responsible gaming programs and its social, environmental and economic responsibilities.
Marco Sala, IGT CEO, said that the company, as a global leader in the gaming industry, “must continuously monitor the potential social risks” in connection with its business.
“We understand that our long-term success is reliant on socially responsible and sustainable business practices,” Sala said in a statement.
Regarding responsible gaming, IGT said it is committed to developing and implementing responsible gaming programs, and outlined some of the steps it has taken, which include:

  • Protective tools to address problem gambling.
  • Support for responsible gaming organizations that address problem gambling.
  • Prevention of underage gambling.

IGT said it works with customers, gaming regulators, research institutes and trade organizations to develop technological solutions to promote responsible gaming. IGT also partners with research institutes and universities to improve programs by developing new tools.
As for social responsibility, IGT said its strategy is executed through community involvement and employee engagement initiatives. IGT said it provides educational and economic opportunities for people in “challenging socio-economic environments around the globe.”
Initiatives include:

  • The After School Advantage program provides disadvantaged students with access to computers. The program has been implemented in countries including the U.S., Chile, Colombia, Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua, St. Kitts and Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Lottomatica supports the “Vincere da grandi” project, which provides sports activities for children who reside in deprived areas in some of Italy’s largest cities.
  • IGT supports projects and events that add cultural value to communities, including Artown, an arts and music festival in Nevada.
Regarding economic responsibility, IGT said its goal is to create economic value over time.
“By analyzing economic value generation and distribution, IGT’s economic impact can be measured beyond a strictly financial view that only considers shareholders’ interests,” a news release from IGT stated.
The company noted that 46 percent of IGT’s total revenue is in North America, while 36 percent is in Italy, and the remaining 18 percent is in international.
IGT, with more than 12,000 employees worldwide, also has more than 8,000 suppliers throughout the world, which are required to comply with existing regulations on workers’ rights and the company code of conduct.
As for environmental sustainability, IGT said it invests in new technologies to reduce the environmental impact of operations through accurate monitoring of energy consumption. It uses an Environmental Management System to reduce waste and pollution caused from its production activities.
The company said its Reno facility is Gold LEED-Certified, which it described as “a mark of quality and achievement in a green building,” and also noted that in Rhode Island, it decreased its energy consumption by 4 percent last year. In addition, more than 73 percent of produced waste is recycled companywide.
IGT said its 2015 Sustainability Report, which can be accessed at www.IGT.com, applies the latest Global Reporting Initiative guidelines to report sustainability impact and performance. These guidelines require submission of comprehensive and analytical information regarding indicators and areas related to CSR.
