Imagine yourself as ‘Captain America’ or ‘Iron Man: 3D’ printing comes to action figures

PAWTUCKET – Imagine yourself as “Captain America,” or “Iron Man.”
Now, thanks to 3D printing, it’s not impossible.
Hasbro is partnering with 3DPlusMe to provide a “personalized 3D printing experience” to allow “kids (and kids at heart!) to become one of their favorite characters” – a 12-inch “Captain America” or “Iron Man” action figure, according to Hasbro spokeswoman Kristina Coppola.
Called “Super Awesome Me,” the technology is new this year.
For now, it is only available in New York City at Toys r Us in Times Square and FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue for $59.99.
She said it provides fans with a “customized, one-of-a-kind action figure through a unique, in-store experience.”
Fans visit a 3D scanning station where a 3D face scanner captures their likeness to create a 3D model.
They then select either“Captain America” or “Iron Man” to create their personalized action figure that is then shipped back to the store for pick up in two to four weeks, Coppola said.
At this point, she said the company is not planning to expand the service beyond New York City.
“But we are always looking for ways to bring fun experiences with our brands to consumers, so stay tuned!” she wrote in an email.
John Frascotti, chief marketing officer, Hasbro Inc., said in a statement, “With 3-D printing, we’re now able to provide fans of Marvel Super Heroes for the first time ever with this very unique opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind action figure featuring their own likeness.”
