Team Independence Financial Partners of Warwick cycled and ran more than 400 miles, raising $15,286 for Best Buddies. This is the team’s fifth year participating and they have raised nearly $50,000 for the international volunteer program that connects individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to employment and friendship opportunities.
The Best Buddies Challenge begins at Hyannis Port and cyclists have the option to bike 20, 50, or 100 miles with cycling legend George Hincapie. Participants may also walk or run a 5K. Runners will join Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis.
There are Best Buddies programs in 21 Rhode Island schools, including four colleges, where students with IDD are paired with volunteers to foster meaningful one-to-one friendships. Many buddies participate in awareness and fundraising programs like the Best Buddies Challenge together.
This empowering program allows individuals with IDD to break through social barriers, encouraging an inclusive school environment during this important time in a young person’s life. •
