Independent fishermen squeezed by catch restrictions

Richard L. Fuka is the president of the Rhode Island Fishermen’s Alliance, an organization he started in 2008 in response to tightening state fishing regulations. The alliance’s mission is to help create sustainable fisheries without putting licensed fishermen out of business. More than 80 percent of the seafood sold in the United States is imported. The alliance represents the interests of many Rhode Island fishermen, most of whom are independent, self-employed businessmen that own their own boats. More
