Indian ambassador takes Brown fellowship

PROVIDENCE – The outgoing Indian ambassador to the U.S. and China is headed to Brown University’s Watson Institute.
The university announced last week that Nirupama Rao has accepted a one-year appointment, which will begin in January.
Rao was the Indian ambassador to the U.S. from 2011 until this month. Prior to that she had served as India’s foreign secretary and has held diplomatic posts in China, Russia and Latin America.
While a fellow at Brown, Rao intends to work on a book about the impact of new media on government and deliver a lecture in fall 2014, The Associated Press reported.
The fellowship is part of the Brown-India initiative, a program that involves research and cultural and academic exchanges with organizations and universities in India. •
