Bay View students and staff raised close to $3,000 to purchase 47 new pairs of Toms shoes for the children of McAuley Village, a Providence-based transition housing program for homeless mothers and their children.
The initiative – Start Something that Matters – stemmed from a summer reading assignment about a book by the same title written by Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms, a shoe company that donates a new pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased. The book highlights entrepreneurs who have turned their business into organizations that give back.
The shoes were unveiled at a party at Providence Place Nordstrom.
“The [Bay View] girls love to serve and be available for the children and moms of McAuley Village. The interaction at this event was priceless! To see the excitement on the children’s faces; to see the parents delighted that their kids were receiving not just one pair of shoes but two! It was priceless,” said Sister Liz, who chaperoned the event. •
