PROVIDENCE – Inspiring Minds, a Providence nonprofit dedicated to preparing inner city youngsters for kindergarten, has received a $50,000 grant from the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust Fund at the Boston Foundation to strengthen and expand its efforts.
“We are thrilled,” said Terri Adelman, executive director of Inspiring Minds, in a statement. “The grant will enable us to reach significantly more unprepared children.”
The nonprofit will use the grant to plan a more comprehensive program to add enrichment and parent engagement, a release said, to a strong academic component. The expansion will require more staff time to collaborate with partner organizations, to recruit and hire teachers, and to find and train more volunteer tutors.
Inspiring Minds in the last few years, has expanded its kindergarten prep effort, begun in summer 2009, that it says worked in giving five-year-olds a meaningful boost in learning skills during an intense monthlong program just before the start of the school year.
Last summer 180 children were in rolled in 10 classes at five elementary schools in the program.
