SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Daniel E. Doyle Jr., executive director of the Institute for International Sport, has been indicted on 18 counts, including embezzlement and forgery.

Doyle, whose nonprofit has been under official investigation since February 2012, has been taken into custody by the state police and was indicted for 18 counts by state Superior Court, Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin and R.I. State Police Col. Stephen O’Donnell announced Friday.

Doyle was indicted on seven counts of embezzlement, one count of obtaining money under false pretenses, five counts of forgery and five counts of filing a false document.

The official investigation began after an audit found that the nonprofit could not account for more than two-thirds of a $575,00 General Assembly legislative grant from 2007.

The investigation by the State Police Financial Crimes Unit and the office of the Attorney General reviewed thousands of documents and interviewing witnesses.

Investigators found that Doyle personally obtained more than $1 million in unauthorized salary increases, bonuses and personal expenses paid for by institute funds.

According to the Attorney General’s office, it is also alleged that funds obtained from the Hassenfeld Foundation for the construction of the Hassenfeld-Hogg Center for Sports Leadership Building were obtained under false pretenses.

Providence County Superior Court Judge Robert D. Krause set bail at $100,000 and ordered Doyle to surrender his passport by Monday and restricted travel to Rhode Island and Connecticut, his last known address.

The next court date is scheduled for May 17.
