NEWPORT – At the annual meeting of the International Tennis Federation held Thursday in the Croatian capital of Zagreb, the International Tennis Hall of Fame announced it would be involved in funding the federation’s development program.

David Haggerty, International Tennis Federation president, welcomed the Hall of Fame and commented on the two organization’s similarities.

“Both the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the ITF are committed to fostering the growth, development, and preservation of the global sport of tennis, and this new partnership highlights these efforts for us both,” he said.
Jointly funded by the ITF, Grand Slam Development Fund and the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the program will focus on developing competitive tennis opportunities worldwide, especially for youth in developing nations, through the collaboration of leading tennis industry organizations. The goal of the development fund is to offer player the chance to gain more international experience so that more nations can be represented in mainstream international competition.

Todd Martin, Hall of Fame CEO, said the opportunity plays into the organization’s mission of championing and preserving the sport’s history.

“We see evidence every day that today’s tennis champions are inspired by those who have come before them … Through celebrating our sport’s great history, we are working to inspire its future – its fans, recreational players and future Hall of Famers. As an organization, we are both excited and committed to partnering with the development program,” he said.
Additionally, beginning in 2017, the Hall of Fame will present an annual award at future ITF Annual General Meetings recognizing an organization demonstrating a distinguished track record of service to the growth of the sport.

The award criteria and process will be detailed at a future date, and the selection process will be a joint effort of ITF and the Hall of Fame.
