Is sequestration good public policy?

More and more it appears that the automatic spending cuts mandated by sequestration are going to go into effect on March 1, the result of Congress and President Barack Obama being unable to reach a compromise agreement on a spending and taxing plan before then.

Are the cuts good policy? Or, as the president has suggested, it is the equivalent of taking a “meat-clever approach” to balancing the nation’s budget, one that will lead to lost jobs and compromised public services that will do long-term harm to the country.
