Social media is all the buzz … for consumers. But a Social Media & Marketing Summit presented by Providence Business News last week made clear that social media provide tools unparalleled in their ability to connect with customers.

In the first of two panels, experts on marketing and legal issues talked about the nuts and bolts of using digital tools to market effectively, but it was an executive from Alex and Ani who provided the most detail as he walked through how a multi-pronged social media strategy had helped the company go from a single Main Street store to a business approaching $100 million in annual sales.

The other half of the summit examined how emerging digital tools – mobile connections and big data analytics – were transforming what even small businesses could do if they took the time to ask the right questions.

In all, the session was a reminder that technological change is a powerful force, and businesses that do not take the time to embrace the possibilities will be left behind. •
