It’s a wrap for medical marijuana

Paul Defruscio jokes that he feels a little bit like the bottle manufacturer who might have supplied Al Capone’s bootlegging operations during Prohibition.

But instead of making bottles for illegal whisky and rum, it’s packaging for medical marijuana, amid a national debate over legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational uses.

His Providence-based molding and packaging company, Jennifer Rose Associates LLC, started out as a confectionery company, which still comprises his core business, but he’s been approached by a couple of medical-marijuana dispensaries in California who are buying his “Pour-N-Pack” product to make medicinal marijuana edibles.

“It’s really an up-and-coming market,” Defruscio said.

Medical marijuana is legal in 23 states, including Rhode Island. Colorado and Washington have legalized it recreationally.

Defruscio thinks revenue tied to legal marijuana use will create a booming industry and hopes his company can grow right along with it. •
