PROVIDENCE – Two Rhode Island universities, Johnson & Wales and Salve Regina, have among the best online nonprofit management master’s degree programs in the country.
The top 50 list, from Top Management Degrees, an online business education and career guide, was released this week.
Data for the ranking came from U.S. News and World Report, Princeton Review and the National Center for Education Statistics. The top online master’s degrees in nonprofit management were ranked based on estimated cost, flexibility, reputation and prestige, student satisfaction and accreditation.
The top spot went to Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies in Boston, followed by Clemson University’s Graduate School in Clemson, S.C., and City University of New York’s Baruch College School of Public Affairs in New York City.
Salve Regina University’s Center for Adult Education ranked 17th best on the list for its online master of business administration with a concentration in nonprofit management.
Johnson & Wales’ College of Management & College of Online Education ranked 31st; it offers an online master of science in nonprofit management.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment at nonprofit organizations is more than 10 percent of U.S. private- sector employment, which totals more than 11 million employees.
“A master’s degree focused on nonprofit management can offer professionals the knowledge and skills to start a new nonprofit venture, to make a change into nonprofit management, or to gain advancement within a current nonprofit organization or program,” Top Management Degrees said.
It said an online master’s degree in nonprofit management is “additionally advantageous for nonprofit professionals because they give optimal flexibility.”
“Nonprofit professionals notoriously work long hours, and already have to delicately balance personal responsibilities with the important demands of nonprofit work,” it said, adding that an online degree enables nonprofit professionals “to gain their management education while juggling their current responsibilities.”
