PROVIDENCE – All four campuses of Johnson & Wales University will be tobacco-free as of July 1, 2016.
“One of the goals of the university’s current strategic plan is to provide a safe and healthy working and learning environment for the entire Johnson & Wales University community,” Ronald Martel, JWU vice president of student affairs, said in a statement. “Over the past two years, Johnson & Wales has taken progressive steps toward becoming tobacco-free, including prohibiting the selling of tobacco products and tobacco-related advertising on campus. We are now ready to take a major step forward to create a healthier environment for the Johnson & Wales community by establishing JWU as a tobacco-free university.”
The first campus to become tobacco-free will be Charlotte, N.C., on July 1., followed by the north Miami campus on Dec. 1.
The Providence and Denver campuses will become tobacco-free on July 1, 2016.
“By becoming tobacco-free, our campus environments will be healthier, safer and cleaner,” Martel said. “Support will be offered for tobacco users to quit, starting on the path for better health. In addition, our students will be better prepared for the reality of tobacco-free workplaces and communities.”
Since the nationwide launch of the Tobacco-Free College Campus Initiative in 2012, there has been a 90 percent increase of the number of college campuses adopting smoke-free policies, according to JWU.
As of April 2, more than 1,500 U.S. college campuses are smoke-free, with more than 1,000 of that number also tobacco-free, according to the Americans for Non Smokers’ Rights.
No college or university in Rhode Island is tobacco-free, according to JWU.
