JWU offering master of arts in teaching degree

PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University will offer a master of arts in teaching degree as part of its teacher education program this fall.
The university stated in a press release that the new degree, along with its master of education in teaching and learning degree, has been made available to meet student demand for advanced degrees in education.

The program offers dual certification concentrations in elementary education and elementary special education, and business education and secondary special education, as well as a certification concentration in culinary arts education.
Johnson & Wales said it is the only higher education institution in Rhode Island to offer the business and culinary certification programs.

“The Johnson & Wales M.A.T. is a perfect fit for working career-changers, as the coursework is completed in a year-round evening schedule until the full-time student-teaching internships at the end of the program,” Director of Teacher Education Program Karen Swoboda said in a statement. “The addition of special education also makes our graduates more marketable.”

Students who successfully complete the M.A.T. may apply for and receive initial certification as a teacher in Rhode Island and may also benefit from the state Department of Education’s reciprocity agreements with other states. Students interested in the program should contact graduate admissions at (401) 598-1838.
