PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University will unveil on Monday the design and details for its new Center for Physician Assistant Studies to be housed in a Clifford Street building the university purchased earlier this fall.
Johnson & Wales’ Master of Science in physician assistant studies will be the first such program in the state.
The university anticipates a June 2014 start date for the program’s inaugural class.
Johnson & Wales plans to renovate the 18,000 square-foot-building, at 154 Clifford St., to contain lecture halls with global teleconferencing capabilities, small group conference rooms, a clinical skills lab, and a cadaver-based anatomy lab.
The school purchased the building for $2.8 million in October. It is one of up to eight buildings in Johnson & Wales long-term plan for expanding is downtown Providence presence.
The Clifford Street building’s Jewelry District location puts it close to the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the state’s burgeoning knowledge economy cluster.
JWU Providence campus president Mim Runey will speak at the unveiling. Also scheduled to speak is George Bottomley, who was named as the founding director of the physician assistant program last August. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant program.
Bottomley also will serve as assistant dean at the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School.
