JWU unveils co-op housing in Cranston

Posted 8/30/13

CRANSTON - Johnson & Wales University next week will officially open Centennial House, which it says is the state’s first cooperative-style housing for students.

Thirty five sophomores and juniors will live in the Norwood Street housing in a cooperative-living arrangement and will be required to engage in community-service projects in the community throughout the academic year, according to a university news release.

JWU Chancellor John Bowen, Providence campus President Mim Runey and Cranston Mayor Allan Fung will join Kevin Walton, Centennial House student president, on Tuesday, Sept. 3, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Student residents will provide tours after the ceremony.

According to the university, the new student-housing option is focused on self-governance and community service. Students will manage the house themselves and complete one major community-service project each term.

Students selected had a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 with no significant conduct issues. Leadership skills and community-service experience were also recommended.
