John Crane lays off 70 in Cranston closing

PROVIDENCE - John Crane Inc. is laying off 70 people and closing its plant in Cranston, according to a notice filed with the R.I. Department of Labor and Training.

The company designs and manufactures seals and associated products mainly for the oil & gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, and mining sectors.

Its facility in Cranston is at 50 Sharpe Drive. The 70 workers belong to the Sealol Shop Union and the layoffs will be completed by April 1.

The plant manager was not immediately available for further comment.
