Johnston to receive an extra $5M in settlement

JOHNSTON – The town will get $5 million as part of two out-of-court settlements over a dispute about odors from the Central Landfill, The Associated Press reported.
Mayor Joseph Polisena and Broadrock Renewables announced both parties had reached an agreement under which the company will pay $3 million over the course of 20 years.
Johnston already announced a $3 million settlement with R.I. Resource Recovery Corp., the landfill operator, to settle a 2011 lawsuit. Polisena told the AP that the Resource Recovery Corporation will pay an additional $2 million in connection with the newly reached settlement.
The town had ordered Broadrock to shut one of its plants earlier this year because of issues related to the odors. The energy company uses gas from the landfill to generate electricity. •
