Jury delivers $25.6M verdict against R.I. Hospital for negligence

PROVIDENCE – A $25.6 million verdict has been delivered against Rhode Island Hospital, the largest negligence verdict in state history,The Associated Press reported.
A jury on April 29 awarded Carl Beauchamp of Exeter $15 million for pain and suffering and $5.6 million for medical expenses. His wife was awarded $5 million, according to the AP.
Superior Court Judge Patricia Hurst also ordered interest of $5.9 million, bringing the total award to $31.5 million.
The hospital acknowledged that several doctors and nurses were negligent in caring for Beauchamp after he went there after hitting his head. He was left with permanent, debilitating injuries, the Associated Press said.
Rhode Island Hospital released the following statement: “Words cannot express our sorrow and regret to the patient and his family. We thank the jury for their attentiveness and service in deciding this difficult matter.”
The hospital said that in 2009, after the incident occurred, it “undertook a complete review of its policies and procedures and made modifications where necessary to prevent this sort of tragic event from happening again.”
A hospital spokeswoman said there are no plans to appeal the verdict.
