KVH says its IP-MobileCast content delivery service growing in popularity

MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries Inc. said more fleets are using its IP-MobileCast content delivery service to stay connected at sea.

“The adoption rate for IP-MobileCast has gained a tremendous amount of momentum in the last six to eight months, and we are seeing a number of major fleets adding and expanding the content delivery service,” Martin Kits van Heyningen, KVH’s CEO, said in a statement. “There is simply no other comparable service available for keeping seafarers informed and entertained on transoceanic voyages. By providing content at sea, these fleets can become employers of choice in the competition for the most competent seafarers, particularly top-notch officers. That in turn can help reduce costs for recruiting, training and retention efforts.”

KVH, which makes technology that provides global high-speed internet, television and voice services via satellite to mobile users at sea and on land, as well as high-performance sensors for defense and commercial applications, launched the service two years ago. It said major fleets that have selected the service include:

  • London-based Navigator Gas, which operates liquefied petroleum gas tankers and has worldwide clients, selected IP-MobileCast for 28 vessels.
  • OSG Ship Management Inc., a New York City-based energy transportation company, equipped more than 20 vessels with the content service.
  • Wisby Ship Management AB of Sweden equipped 18 vessels.
  • Klaveness Ship Management, an Oslo, Norway-based global fleet operator selected the service for more than 10 vessels in its container and bulk fleet.
  • Valles Steamship (Canada) Ltd., of Vancouver, added IP-MobileCast for six vessels.
  • Seattle-based United States Seafoods LLC, subscribed to IP-MobileCast for three vessels, enabling their seafarers to receive content via their personal devices.

Also, Vroon, a global maritime fleet operator based in the Netherlands, and Seaspan Ship Management in Vancouver, British Columbia, an independent owner, operator and manager of containerships, are continuing to add the IP-MobileCast service to more vessels in their fleets. More than 65 vessels between the two companies now subscribe to the IP-MobileCast service.
“The IP-MobileCast service is well-liked and used extensively by our crewmembers at sea, who tell me they particularly appreciate the ease of use and the availability of the news, sports and entertainment content on smartphones, tablets and ships’ TVs,” David Kramer, director at Seaspan, said in prepared remarks.
