Karczmar named Miriam’s physician of the year

PROVIDENCE – The Miriam Hospital named Dr. Peter Karczmar the recipient of its 2012 “Outstanding Physician of the Year” award.
Karczmar, a pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, was unanimously selected by his peers for the hospital’s top honor, presented on June 27.
Along with his role on Miriam’s medical staff, Karczmar is a partner in Coastal Medical’s pulmonary and internal medicine group and serves as director of the Coastal Medical Sleep Disorders Center.
Karczmar is also actively involved in many community-based organizations in his South Providence neighborhood. He is the founder and board president of Taming Asthma, a nonprofit clinic located on Providence’s South Side that provides free asthma education and treatment for uninsured residents.
Karczmar has also been working to establish a medical clinic in conjunction with the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, a nationally recognized organization focusing on eliminating gang-related violence.
Karczmar also served as president of the hospital’s Medical Executive Committee for the last two years,
“His leadership, diplomacy and dedication have been critical at an important time for our hospital,” said Dr. William Corwin, senior vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at The Miriam Hospital.
Karczmar, a native of Warsaw, Poland, resides in the Elmwood section of Providence with his wife Cathy, a veterinarian specializing in feline medicine.
