Kate Burton to receive 2013 Pell Lifetime Achievement Award

PROVIDENCE – Stage and screen actress Kate Burton will be honored with the 2013 Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts at the 17th annual Pell Awards, Trinity Repertory Co. announced.

The Pell Awards, which will be celebrated on Monday, June 10 at Trinity Rep., honor Sen. Claiborne Pell and recognize artistic excellence in Rhode Island as well as in the New England region and nationally.

Burton has amassed a wide range of awards over the course of her decades-long career, according to Trinity Rep. Her recent film roles include Josh Radnor’s “Liberal Arts,” “2 Days in New York” from writer/director Julie Delpy and Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours,” among others.

Television audiences can see Burton in recurring roles on ABC’s “Scandal,” CBS’s “The Good Wife,” NBC’s “Grimm” and the HBO Series “Veep.” Over the course of her television career, she guest started on hit shows including “Law & Order,” “The West Wing,” “The Practice” and “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.”

On stage, Burton most recently starred as Katherine Cornell in the new A.R. Gurney play “The Grand Manner” at the Lincoln Center Theatre. Burton received two Tony Award nominations in 2002 on Broadway for her title role in “Hedda Gabler.”

Previous Lifetime Achievement in the Arts honorees include Jane Alexander, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Viola Davis, Olympia Dukakis, Adrian Hall, Arthur Miller, Liza Minnelli, Toni Morrison, Robert Redford, Chita Rivera, Jason Robards, Maurice Sendak, Beverly Sills, Stephen Sondheim and Kevin Spacey.

The 17th annual Pell Awards are scheduled for Monday, June 10 at Trinity Rep. Individual tickets to the full event are $500 and a limited number of individual tickets to the ceremony and post-show reception are $250.

Trinity Rep. is also accepting nominations to recognize outstanding local artists for the 2013 Rhode Island Pell Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Nominations are due by Feb. 17 and submission forms are available online at www.trinityrep.com.

Pell Awards’ selection criteria includes: excellence in the artist’s chosen field, work that “significantly advances the artist’s chosen art form,” and a demonstration through artistic presence or contributions to the betterment of the Rhode Island community or world at large.
