PROVIDENCE – Sixty children participated ride this summer in the Red Shed Bike Shop’s first Bike Camp.

Each participant received their own bicycle from the bike shop, a lock for the bike and a helmet to keep. Funding from Rhode Island Local Initiative Support Corporation & Citizens Bank Growing Communities Grant, the Providence Department of Recreation and the R.I. Department of Health enabled most of the children to participate on scholarships – many riding a bike for the first time.

They also learned bike safety and maintenance, riding in the city and on the Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway bike path.

There will be a celebratory luncheon today at Riverside Park, 50 Aleppo St., Providence at 12 noon. All are invited to join the kids, the staff and donors for a good, old-fashioned cookout.

The bike camp was administered by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council’s Red Shed Bike Shop. Campers became students of the industrial history of the river and how to protect and use this resource wisely during their daily rides. Lunch was provided through the Providence Recreation Department’s free lunch program.

Alicia Lehrer, executive director of the council added that next year, interested people can sponsor a child for one week of camp in 2014 for $100.
