Kilmartin warns about text ‘smishing’ scams

PROVIDENCE – Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin is warning consumers of a scam where they receive text messages offering free Walmart, Target and other consumer store gift cards, so-called “smishing scams.”
The link in the text message leads to a website asking for consumers’ information, such as social security numbers, bank-account numbers and birth dates.
The text in this scam reads, “Dear Walmart/Target shopper, Congratulations you have just won a $1,000 Gift Card. Click here to claim your gift. (cancel: STOP).”
A news release from Kilmartin’s office said that there has been an increase in reported scam attempts in recent weeks.
To report the texts, contact the Consumer Protection Unit at 401-274-4400 or contactus@riag.ri.gov. &#8226
