PROVIDENCE – United Way of Rhode Island awarded the Local Initiatives Support Corp. a $150,000 grant in support of the organization’s Rhode Island Child Care and Early Learning Facilities Fund and its development of safe, high-quality learning environments for children.

Jeanne Cola, LISC executive director, said the organization is grateful to the United Way for its continued support of the fund.

“We share a commitment to creating communities of choice and opportunity across our state … At LISC we know that children do better in school and in life when they are able to participate in high quality early education programs and we are proud of the work we do to promote and support improvements to our early care and education system statewide,” she added.

Begun in 2001, the Rhode Island Child Care and Early Learning Facilities Fund is a public-private partnership aimed at improving the quality and capacity of early care and education facilities across the state. To date, it has invested more than $18 million and worked with more than 220 Rhode Island organizations. The grant provided by the United Way will allow LISC to continue supporting companies who are dealing with construction and licensing issues, those beginning fundraising campaigns and obtaining playground audits.

The grant, which will be awarded in three $50,000 segments over the next three years, was awarded as part of the United Way’s 2016-2019 competitive grant cycle – which focuses on funding efforts that help engage children with learning opportunities, help adults accomplish new career goals and allow families to meet basic needs.

Anthony Maione, president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island, said: “While our goal of changing 250,000 lives by 2020 is ambitious, the innovative ideas of the funding proposals we received really captured the forward thinking we need to make the vision a reality.”

Since the launch of its 2016-2019 grant cycle, United Way has awarded $3.1 million of the $12 million the organization has committed over the next three years as part of its new strategic plan, LIVE UNITED 2020.
