WARWICK – Students interested in competing in the 2012 Rhode Island Cyber Foundations Competition must register by Monday, Oct. 15, Rep. James R. Langevin announced.
This is the third edition of the competition, which is designed to test the computer networking skills of high school students while introducing them to the cybersecurity field.
“There is a particularly significant shortfall of cybersecurity professionals despite a growing market for their talents as cyber threats increase, and Rhode Island has an opportunity to fill this void,” Langevin said in prepared remarks. “The Cyber Foundations Competition is a centerpiece of an effort to build up an industry that will provide sustainable job creation and growth in our state.”
In last year’s competition, Rhode Island had the highest participation rate in the country. The top three finalists from the 2012 competition will receive cash prizes.
The competition, administered in states across the country by the National Board of Information Security Examiners, features a series of timed quizzes that last roughly an hour each. They are designed to test aptitude in the three foundational skills of cybersecurity: networking, operating systems and system administration.
The fall’s contents will take place as follows:
Module 1 on Networking – Nov. 2.
Module 2 on Operating Systems – Nov. 16.
Module 3 on System Administration – Dec. 7.
Interested parties must register with coordinator Erin Flynn from the New England Institute of Technology at firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, Oct. 15. There are registration options available for both individuals and schools that want to open the event to an unlimited number of students.
