PROVIDENCE – Marie J. Langlois, retired managing director of Washington Trust Investors, has been named chairperson of the Rhode Island Foundation.
The foundation’s board of directors elected Langlois to succeed Fred Butler for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, the foundation said in a press release. The 12-member board of directors is responsible for setting policy at the foundation, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016.
Langlois, who has served as a board member since 2011, is currently chairperson of the foundation’s investment committee and serves on the nominating and corporate governance committees.
“As we enter our second century, we will continue to identify challenges and opportunities, and marshal the resources to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities to improve the quality of life of all the citizens of Rhode Island,” said Langlois. “I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as chair, and I hope that I will be able to meet the standards established by Fred Butler and his predecessors.”
Langlois is also vice chairperson of the board of Salve Regina University and chairperson of The Miriam Hospital Foundation. She is a member of the board of The Rhode Island Philharmonic and Music School.
Founded with a $10,000 gift from Jesse Metcalf in 1916, the foundation’s assets have grown to more than $800 million. To celebrate its centennial, the organization plans a full year of community activities highlighted by a campaign to raise $10 million to preserve and improve Roger Williams Park.
Butler’s term expires Dec. 31.
“It has been my honor to contribute to the foundation’s work serving the people of Rhode Island,” Butler said. “I am certain that Marie’s remarkable vision and deep experience will enable the foundation to continue moving our state forward.”
