Latimer 5K to provide scholarships

Posted 6/22/12

PROVIDENCE – The Steven K. Latimer Memorial 5K, the first annual fundraising event for the Steven K. Latimer Memorial Scholarship Fund, will be held Sept. 29 at Roger Williams Park to benefit the fund that will provide educational scholarships to Rhode Island students who have lost a parent or parents due to an act of violence.

The fund was founded by Myra Latimer in memory of her son, Steven K. Latimer, a father to five-year-old Nevaeh when he was killed at the age of 23 in October 2011 while applying to the nursing program at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick.

“Steven had begun to mature and grow and recognize the importance of a good education,” Latimer wrote in a letter announcing the fund. “I recall the last time I saw him and Nevaeh together, they were having a conversation, and Steven was stressing the importance of her education.”
