PROVIDENCE – A state representative currently facing charges that he pocketed the proceeds from a life-insurance policy on a friend’s dead daughter was arrested last week for allegedly practicing law without a license, The Associated Press reported.

Rep. Leo Medina, D-Providence, was arraigned in Providence District Court on eight counts of unauthorized practice of law. Not-guilty pleas were entered on his behalf. He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance.

Prosecutors allege Medina promoted himself as an attorney on business cards and through advertising. He provided legal advice and received fees for services performed, or to be performed, by an attorney, according to the allegations. State police say he received $1,250 from two individuals in separate cases.

Medina does not have a law license or a law degree, the AP said. Authorities investigated after a complaint was filed with the state Supreme Court’s Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. •
