PROVIDENCE – The Conservation Law Foundation’s Legal Food Hub kicked off today in Rhode Island.

The CLF provides local farmers and food entrepreneurs with free legal aid, and announced in August it would take the program nationally, following successful launches of Legal Food Hubs in Massachusetts and Maine, with the expansion in Rhode Island marking the first step.

The launch of the program was celebrated at an event Tuesday morning at Social Enterprise Greenhouse.
Approximately $825,000 in free legal services already has been provided to more than 150 individuals and businesses throughout New England.
Jenny Rushlow, director of CLF’s Farm and Food Initiative, has said that small-scale farms and food businesses, “like every small business” have legal needs that “too often go unaddressed because of the cost.” The Legal Food Hub was started to relieve that cost burden, she said.
