Letter carrier food drive Saturday

PROVIDENCE – The National Association of Letter Carriers and Rhode Island Community Food Bank jointly coordinated the 24th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in neighborhoods across Rhode Island on May 14.

Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, said the drive couldn’t come at a better time.

“This food drive comes at a critical time as we actually see food donations decrease during the summer months. The letter carriers make it easy for everyone to make a difference in the fight against hunger,” he said.

The association is asking participants to leave a bag of healthy, nonperishable food items near their mailboxes early Saturday morning. The items will be picked up by the local letter carrier on their usual routes and delivered to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank for distribution. Among those items that are most in need are canned soup and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice, canned beans, tuna and health cereals.

Rhode Island veteran letter carrier Scott Desjarlais said last year more than 96,000 pounds of food were donated.

Each month the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, delivers food to 60,000 struggling Rhode Islanders through 167 affiliated agencies across the state.
