Since coming to Rhode Island in 2008 after overseeing Boston’s massive Big Dig project, Department of Transportation Director Michael Lewis has steadily built a strong national and local reputation as a transportation leader. He’s overseen major infrastructure improvements, including the Iway in downtown Providence and expansion of commuter rail across the Ocean State.
In a state where 80 percent of highway spending comes from the federal government, he’s also taken on politically unpopular issues such as tolling in a bid to boost the state’s meager transportation revenue.
Through it all, Mr. Lewis has shown an ability to work equally well with government and community groups, including The Providence Foundation.
In a letter to Gov.-elect Gina M. Raimondo urging Mr. Lewis’ reappointment, foundation Chairman William F. Hatfield and Executive Director Daniel A Baudouin called RIDOT “a major force in the transformation of downtown [Providence].” We agree.
Gov.-elect Raimondo has already shown a recognition of the value of continuity and experience in key administrative posts. She plans to seek the reappointment of Janet L. Coit as director of the state Department of Environmental Management.
Mr. Lewis would be an equally valuable addition to her administration, as he has been for the two governors he has served already. •
