Lighting fixtures upgraded at some R.I. DEM facilities

PROVIDENCE – Lighting fixtures at six R.I. Department of Environmental Management facilities have been upgraded to eco-friendlier and cost efficient models by the department and the R.I. Office of Energy Resources.

Parks and piers across Rhode Island will benefit from this transition thanks to Gov. Gina M. Raimondo’s “Lead by Example” in Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Initiative, according to a DEM press release. By signing Executive Order 15-17, Raimondo set state agencies in motion to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

“DEM and OER hit the ground running with this project, and I am pleased their collaborative efforts will help reduce state government’s carbon footprint and cut our high energy costs,” said Raimondo in prepared remarks. “We are making great strides in growing our green economy in Rhode Island, and it is important that state agencies lead by example and continue to work together to secure a clean and affordable energy future for our state.”

This transition has resulted in more than 1,000 LED fixtures, bulbs or retrofit kits being installed at Burlingame State Park in Charlestown, Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Fort Wetherill Marine Fisheries in Jamestown, Lafayette Fish Hatchery in North Kingstown, Pier 9 in Newport and the Port of Galilee in Narragansett.

Because of this project, 356,370 kilowatt-hours of energy and $50,000 in energy-related costs are estimated to be saved, according to the news release.

Energy-efficient LEDs cost less in maintenance because their lifespan is 50,000 hours over 11 years when used 12 hours a day. They do not contain mercury, are recyclable and are brighter than fluorescent bulbs.

OER manages “Lead by Example” and DEM’s project was funded by proceeds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and National Grid’s energy-efficiency program incentives.
