Little Compton, Chariho Regional left out of Race to the Top funding

LITTLE COMPTON – The Little Compton and Chariho Regional school districts will not receive any of the $75 million grant money awarded to Rhode Island over four years through the federal government’s Race to the Top Education funding, EastBayRI.com reported on Thursday.

Little Compton was left out of the Rhode Island Race to the Top application because the school district circled too many negative responses in a memorandum of understanding, the newspaper reported.

“The committee was not made aware that as a result of nine negative responses and seven positive responses in the [memorandum of understanding] that the federal government might not include our district in the state’s Race to the Top application,” said Little Compton School Superintendent Kathryn M. Crowley in a letter to Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist requesting reconsideration.

The Little Compton district’s appeal is currently under review, a spokesperson for the commissioner confirmed while noting that the Chariho Regional school district did not make a similar request.

Little Compton could have received about $71,000 in funding over the next four years; as it stands now, it will not receive anything.

The school district answered negatively to its desire to participate in programs for low- achieving schools, data-systems development, alternative-compensation models and assessing professional-development needs.

Among the “yes” answers, Little Compton showed interest in teacher evaluations, new teacher support and dealing with hard-to-staff subjects, EastBayRI.com reported.
