Living RIte peer training program graduates nine

PROVIDENCE – Nine individuals with intellectual disabilities graduated from the Living RIte Peer Specialist Training Program on Aug. 15. The graduation ceremony was hosted by Stepping Up at the Community College of Rhode Island atrium.
Funding for the inaugural six-week training came from a three-year “Health Care Innovation” grant awarded to the University of Rhode Island by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The grant is supporting the “Living RIte – A Disruptive Solution for Management of Chronic Care Disease” project.
The Living RIte model is based on interdisciplinary care-management teams that include community health workers, doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals. The new Living RIte centers are located at both AccessPoint RI in Cranston (formerly Cranston ARC), and Seven Hills in Woonsocket.
The nine graduating individuals spent four weeks training in customer service, medical terminology, HIPAA compliance, resume writing, teamwork, time and stress-management skills, as well as job search and interviewing skills.
Participants went on to one of the two Living RIte Centers and completed a two-week internship, simultaneously training in “Healthy Lifestyles” reviewing personal choices that lead to physical and emotional health. •
