PROVIDENCE – Local 1 percent meal and beverage tax collections increased 8.3 percent over the year in July, growing to $2.8 million, the state Department of Revenue said Monday.
The local 1.0 percent meal and beverage tax is collected on the sale of a meal and/or beverage that is prepared away from home.
Comparing July with June, collections climbed 15 percent.
Both on a year-over-year and month-to-month basis, collections outperformed the prior-year comparison period.
East Greenwich led collections in July, with a 214.8 percent increase to $233,322 from $74,110 in July 2015. Little Compton was next with a 38.8 percent increase, followed by Hopkinton, 36.2 percent; Jamestown, 29.7 percent; and Johnston, 27.5 percent. Scituate had the largest percentage decrease over the year at 37.4 percent, preceded by Cumberland (-15.1 percent); Barrington (-14.3 percent); Cranston (-10.7 percent); and Woonsocket (-9 percent).
