Local teams advance to regional robotics competition

WARWICK – Three local robotics teams will advance to the East Super-Regional FIRST competition in Scranton, Pa., next month after beating out 30 other middle and high school teams at a competition last weekend at New England Institute of Technology.
This was the 10th year that NEIT has served as Rhode Island’s FIRST Tech Challenge affiliate partner.
Founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), was designed to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in students through the use of robotics.
In September, 56 middle and high school robotics teams registered to compete in the state competition. After three qualifying tournaments Dec. 5 and 19 and Jan. 9, 33 teams were left, and they competed Jan. 30 at NEIT.
The following teams are advancing to Pennsylvania:

  • Aquidneck Island Robotics (Team name: Rhode Rage)
  • North Kingstown High School (Team name: North Robotics)
  • Westerly High School (Team name: Westerly Bulldogs)

Rhode Rage won the inspire award; the team that receives this award is chosen by the judges as having best represented a “role model” FIRST Tech Challenge team.
