WASHINGTON – Worcester, Mass.-based Veterans Inc. was awarded $225,000 to help homeless veterans in Southeastern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island find work, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced Tuesday.

The funds, which will focus on helping veterans from Providence and New Bedford, are part of 64 grants totaling more than $15 million across the US.

Veterans Inc. received another $300,000 to help homeless veterans from Central and Western Massachusetts – specifically Worcester and Springfield, Mass. – find work.

The grants were awarded under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.

“Today, the Department of Labor is taking an important step to help homeless veterans reintegrate into the American labor force,” Solis said in prepared remarks.

“This is a complicated challenge that requires an 'all hands on deck' response,” said Solis. “Our grantees span communities across the country, from the District of Columbia to Puerto Rico, and we salute them for their commitment to assist those who've served.”

Funds were awarded on a competitive basis to state and local workforce investment boards, local public agency and other groups including faith-based and community organizations.

Under these grants, homeless veterans may receive occupational, classroom and on-the-job training as well as job search placement and assistance.

In addition to the $15 million announced by Solis yesterday, the Labor Department will provide more than $19 million in funding during the upcoming program year, according to a release.
