Long Island firm buys JT’s Lumber

NORTH KINGSTOWN – JT’s Lumber Company LLC, a century-old local building-supply company, has been purchased by Riverhead Building Supply Corp., a company based on Long Island. Financial terms were not disclosed.

JT’s Lumber has two stores, located in North Kingstown and Middletown. It was founded in Newport in 1909 by James T. O’Connell, the son of Irish immigrants and grandfather of Patrick E. Rooney, the company’s current president and CEO, according to its Web site.

“JT’s Lumber is a business that is very similar to our own,” Edgar Goodale, president of Riverhead Building, said in a statement. “It’s a good fit for us, and we are making a smooth transition into the Rhode Island market.”

Shirley, N.Y.-based Riverhead Building has been in business for more than 60 years and operates nine stores on Long Island, according to a news release. Its subsidiary companies include Riverhead Building Supply, Perimeters and Heritage Wide Plank Flooring.

JT’s Lumber will keep its current name. Its two JT’s Signature Space design centers will be rebranded as Perimeters showrooms. Riverhead currently operates six Perimeters showrooms on Long Island.

“Riverhead Building Supply will operate under the JT’s Lumber name, with the same qualified personnel you know and trust,” Goodale said. “Our goal is to keep the JT’s Lumber tradition going strong for another 100 years.”
