Lovecraft Film Festival coming to capital

PROVIDENCE – The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival will come to the hometown of its namesake for the first time in August.

The festival, founded in Portland, Ore., more than 20 years ago, features three days of films and activities, including author readings, panels and vendors. The festival celebrates independent cinema adapted from or inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. The Providence native died in 1937 in poverty and became known posthumously for creating “weird fiction,” combining science fiction, fantasy and horror.

The festival will be hosted by the Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council (organizers of NecronomiCon Providence) and organizers in Portland, in partnership with the Providence Public Library, where the films will screen.

Blocks of films will run on Aug. 19 from 6-11 p.m. and 1-11 p.m. on Aug. 20. On Aug. 21, beginning at noon, there will be author readings and other activities. •
