Report: MBTA discussing rate fare increase

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority may increase fares as much as 10 percent every two years, Boston.com is reporting.
Boston.com said that on Monday, the T’s Fiscal and Management Control Board voted 4-0 to approve a new fare policy, but stopped short of putting the 10 percent rate increase in place.
However, the policy states that fares could rise by as much as 10 percent every two years, starting in July.
MBTA officials have said for months that they plan to increase fares, given a $242 million budget gap projected for next fiscal year. That deficit assumes a 5 percent fare increase, Boston.com reported.
Fares were raised by 5 percent last year, the article states.
