MBTA seeks to update Wi-Fi

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is aiming to expand Wi-Fi Internet service to its commuter ferries and the interior of three of its rail stations, the Boston Business Journal reported.

According to the news source, the MBTA is searching for bids to replace AT&T as its Wi-Fi vendor. The MBTA also wants the new vendor to expand service to commuter ferries and the interior of South Station, North Station and Back Bay Station.

The MBTA outlined its plan to “reduce, expand and improve” the availability and quality of the current Wi-Fi system in a request for proposals published Thursday, reported BBJ. The proposal said the T hopes to install a “continuous, secure Wi-Fi system on all commuter rail coaches, commuter boats and included stations.”

An MBTA spokesman told the news source that the T expects a bid award by fall and hopes to have the new Wi-Fi system up and running by the end of the calendar year.
