PROVIDENCE – Michael Magee has joined Chiefs for Change, a nationwide nonprofit focused on local education, as its first CEO.
Magee has left his post as CEO of the Rhode Island Mayoral Academies, which he also co-founded.
“Throughout his career, Mike has demonstrated a sincere commitment to improving education in this country,” said Chiefs for Change Chairman John White. “He is a visionary leader who has a proven ability to turn ideas into action that benefit families, educators and children.”
Magee co-founded RIMA in 2009 with then-Cumberland Mayor Daniel J. McKee, who is now the state’s lieutenant governor. The bipartisan statewide network brings mayors together to drive significant improvements to city schools.
“I believe Chiefs for Change stands to create necessary conditions that will allow public schools in all parts of the country to make extraordinary gains,” Magee said.
Chiefs for Change is an independent network of state and local education officials who represent both Republican and Democratic administrations. This year, the network has grown to include both state and city chief education officers.
“I am absolutely thrilled to have Mike with Chiefs for Change,” said Deborah Gist, superintendent of public schools in Tulsa, Okla. “We are fortunate to have an educator and leader of his caliber join our team.”
Gist is Rhode Island’s most recent former commissioner of elementary and secondary education.
