PROVIDENCE – Barron’s last month named Malcolm A. Makin the No. 1 financial adviser in Rhode Island. It also named five others to its list of America’s Top 1,200 Advisors: 2015 state-by-state.

Makin, 70, is president of Westerly-based Professional Planning Group with $1.06 billion in assets. He heads a team of 17 employees working for about 1,400 clients. In favor of broadly diversified portfolios, Makin says in Barron’s that the “unpardonable sin is to sell equities when they’re down to produce income.”

Barron’s, a Dow Jones & Co. newspaper, created the list based on a number of criteria, including assets under management, revenue produced for the company and quality of service.

David Reiser, of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, is ranked No. 2 for Rhode Island and his branch manager Bradley Barber lauded him in a statement.

“I’m extremely proud that David is representing Morgan Stanley Wealth Management on this list,” Barber said. “Competition is steep to be selected for the list and those who make the cut represent a very high level of achievement in serving their clients’ wealth management needs.”

No. 3 is Edythe De Marco of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Providence, No. 4 and No 5 are Robert DiColo and Carolann Doherty Brown both of UBS Financial Services in Providence and Newport, respectively.

Finally, No. 6 is John Zitzmann of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.
