PROVIDENCE – Carol Malysz, the former head of the Center for Women & Enterprise Rhode Island, has been appointed executive director of MedMates, the life sciences technology networking group.

The appointment, announced Tuesday, was effective Jan. 2.

Malysz replaces Kelly Nevins, who was hired in May and was the group’s first full-time executive director. She left at the end of November to take a position at the Women’s Fund, according to David Goldsmith, MedMates co-founder and president of its board of directors. Goldsmith praised Nevins’ performance during her time with MedMates.

In addition to day-to-day operations, Malysz will be responsible for implementing MedMates’ new strategic plan. Goldsmith said he is thrilled to have Malysz lead MedMates.

“Carol’s breadth of experience in helping companies to succeed, as well as her passion for innovation, extensive network of existing professional relationships and overall love for the state of Rhode Island will be an invaluable asset to MedMates,” Goldsmith said.

Malysz, in a statement, said she is looking forward to working with MedMates’ partners to capitalize on the state’s “potential to become one of the foremost hubs of life science innovation in the country.”

As executive director, Malysz will advocate on behalf of MedMates members and meet with university officials and government leaders to determine ways to collaborate to advance public policy and promote business development. She also will develop the MedMates board of directors and member volunteers.

Malysz previously led the Center for Women & Enterprise Rhode Island for nine years, where she worked on business development programs for aspiring and existing women business owners. She was executive director from 2000 to 2008.

Prior to CWE, she led the Business Expansion Division at the R.I. Economic Development Corp. and assisted Rhode Island businesses with accessing financing, exporting, training, market research and relocation services, working closely with the Chambers of Commerce and other R.I. business and professional organizations.

Most recently, she worked with firms across all industries in greater New England to provide executive coaching, leadership development and workplace analytics consulting for startups to Fortune 500 companies.

She earned her MBA in entrepreneurship from Babson College and is a graduate of the Center for Creative Leadership.
